INTRODUCTION

Manglietia glauca is a fast growing broad leaved species and one of the main planting species for the central area of Northern Vietnam and North East Vietnam. However, due to unselected seeds the quality of plantations is not good, so study in selection of mother trees and establishment of seed stands and seed orchards aiming at improving and increasing quality of plantations for the next generation is an urgent requirement.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

1. Growth of provenances

At present natural forest of Manglietia glauca has been basically destroyed and existing plantations have been established with various seed sources, so the provenances in the trial were from plantations

Growth of provenances in the nursery and on planting site at the age of one year in Cauhai (Vinhphu province) showed that the local provenance (Cauhai provenance) was better than the others from Thanhson, Doanha, Yenbai and Huongson . So Cauhai provenance was chosen for selection of plus trees and establishment of seed stands and seed orchards.

2. Variation in type of bark cracking

From the results of the study it is recognised that there were three types of bark cracking. Smooth bark of Manglietia glauca with egg shape fruit (99% trees of the stand ), deep cracked bark ( 0.1-0.2% trees) and intermediate cracked bark ( 5% trees).

The outstanding difference between the three types of bark cracking is in the various speeds of growth. In the twenty year old plantation the intermediate type surpassed the first and the second ones by 30% and 54,8% in diameter and 7,1% and 15,5% in height respectively.
