– To develop the technical process for integrated management of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium and A. auriculiformis (01 technical process/pest group), in which the incidence and severity of leaf insects and beetles decrease of more than 75 percent in comparison with control experiment and approved by MARD as technological advanced.

– To establish 12 experiments (at least 01 hectare/experiment) for integrated management of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium and A. auriculiformis with the incidence and severity of leaf insects and beetles decrease more than 75 percent in comparison with control experiment, including:

+ 02 experiments for integrated management of leaf insect pests and 02 experiments for integrated management of stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium in Northern Vietnam.

+ 02 experiments for integrated management of leaf insect pests and 02 experiments for integrated management of stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. auriculiformis in the central of Vietnam.

+ 02 experiments for integrated management of leaf insect pests and 02 experiments for integrated management of stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. auriculiformis in southern Vietnam.

Key results:

There are more than two million hectares of Acacia in Vietnam, making up nearly half of the country’s total forest plantation estate. However, Acacia plantations in Vietnam has been damaged significantly from leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles. This project determined the damage situation and additional identification of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles, the biological characteristic, and control measures of the main damage species. The project also developed the technical process for integrated management of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium and A. auriculiformis that has been approved by the Scientific Council of MARD as technological advance.

The leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles have occurred in all the northern, central and southern of Vietnam, and damaged at low to strong level. The incidence of leaf insect pests was surveyed from 24,7% – 71,6%; and the incidence of stem borer beetles varies from 16,5 – 47,3%. Three leaf insect species (Ericeia pertendens, Biston sppresaria, Phalera grotei) and two beetle species (Euwallacea fornicatus and Xylosandrus crassiusculus) were determined as the main damage species in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium and A. auriculiformis.

The acacia plantations were damaged strongly by leaf insect pests at the stage of 3 years old, while stem borer beetles mostly damaged the plantations at the stage of more than 3 years old. Furthermore, the biological charactertistic of one leaf pests (Ericeia pertendens) and two stem borer beetles (Euwallacea fornicatus and Xylosandrus crassiusculus) were detemined; and there were 12 fungi species isolated and identified from beetles and gallery in hosts.

The project identified control measures for integrated management of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles and this has been recognized as technically advanced by MARD.

Lastly, the project showed that the application of silviculture (e.g. clearing ground layer or understory and use of fertilizer); light trapping for leaf pests and lure trapping for stem borer beetles; and usage of parasitic fungi and bacteria is effective in integrated management of leaf insect pests and stem borer beetles in Acacia hybrid, A. mangium and A. auriculiformis in Vietnam.
