INTRODUCTION

Eucalyptus is a tree genus which originated mainly from Australia and contains some hundred species.

Due to its fast growth, wide adaptability and the wood having a high value for industry, many countries in the world have introduced and planted it successfully over several million hectares.

During the period 1960-1972 in northern Vietnam, many thousands of hectares of Eucalyptus plantation were established on bare hills. So far the major part of Eucalyptus plantations has shown poor growth and has not proved promising as a supply of forest wood. One of the basic reasons for tthis situation is that we did not understand the soil requirements of Eucalyptus, therefore eucalypts were planted on un-suitable sites.

On the other hand, there have been some recent opinions which suggest that Eucalyptus plantations caused soil degradation, water depletion and killed grass vegetation used for grazing.

RESEARCH CONTENTS

The research subject concentrated on solving two problems:

1. Determine the soil requirements of Eucalyptus trees, especially those factors which play a key role in our conditions. On that basis, establish standards to select suitable soils for planting.

2. Investigate the preliminary influence of Eucalyptus mono-species plantations on soil fertility of bare hills, to serve a as basis for establishing reasonable management measures.

E.exsertaand E.tereticornis are the two main species to be investigated on low hill areas of northern Vietnam.
