species and provenance trials of pines (1981 – 1985)

INTRODUCTION

Pines have been one of the main planting species in Vietnam for many years. Pines can protect soil from erosion, improve the environment, supply wood for construction and furniture and pulp for paper. Selecting species and provenances with fast growth and adaptation to planting sites in regions to produce highly productive plantations is one of the important tasks of forest seed work.

Before 1975 in southern Vietnam, some exotic pines such as Pinus patula, P.caribaea, P.elliottii, P. longisfolia, P.taiwanensis and P.taeda were introduced into Langhanh and Manglinh (Lamdong province) in 1948 and more especially in 1963.

In northern Vietnam, species and provenance trials for P.caribaea and P.oocarpa were established in Central Northern Vietnam during 1974-1980 and provenance trials for P.merkusii were also established in Botrach (Binh-Tri -Thien province) and in Langhanh (Lamdong province) during 1981-1985 by Phuninh Forest Research Centre under the support of SIDA (Nguyen Duong Tai).
