preliminary study on some technical measures for intensive cultivation of e.exserta plantations in midland area at dailai, vinhphu (1971 – 1975)

INTRODUCTION

E.exsertais a tree species introduced for planting on bare hill land. In the last few years, E.exserta plantations were developed quite rapidly with success in some areas and with failure in other areas where economic effect was low as was plantation productivity.

The problem is that study on some technical measures for intensive cultivation of Eucalyptus plantation must be carried out to increase the productivity of the plantation.

Measures to solve the problem are:

– After soils used for planting in order to improve physical-chemical properties (hole digging with turning up earth around planting holes and complete ploughing).

– Use mineral fertilizers (apatite and lime powder).

– Improve soils by planting leguminous plants (Tephrosia candida).

RESEARCH CONTENT AND REMARKS

1. Soil preparation measures clearly have a good influence on growth of eucalypts in the first 3 years, especially the use of complete ploughing: after 3 years, Eucalyptus trees can grow 1.5 times higher than trees planted in holes without ploughing (height was 162% of control, ground level diameter was 167% of the control).

2. The combination of complete ploughing and using ground apatite (1 ton/ha) could obviously increase growth of eucalypts compared to the control. After 3 years, height could be 120% and ground-level diameter 114% of the control using complete ploughing without fertilizer. Using lime-powder (2 ton/ha) on completely ploughed soils did not increase height but increased ground-level diameter of treated trees (106% of the control using complete ploughing without lime). Without complete ploughing, after 2 years, the effect of ground apatite was not marked, however, using lime powder increased growth of eucalypts slightly in comparison
