INTRODUCTION

Cercospora needle blight is a most serious disease for many pine species in the seedling stage in the nursery or at 1-3 years after planting in the field. This is a very important reason why planting pines have met considerable difficulties in recent years, especially P.merkusii. Therefore, many production organizations have concluded that Cercospora needle blight is the main reason for the success or failure of pine planting work.

Since 1965, the Forest Research Institute has started investigations on this disease with different phases as follows,

* 1965 : surveys to find the disease

* 1966 – 1968: basic and applied research

* 1969 – 1970: application of results in one forest enterprise (Yendung, Habac).

* 1973 : development research in 3 forest enterprises and stations belonging to 2 provinces: Habac and Quangninh.
