INTRODUCTION

Due to the characteristics of the species and structure of Styrax tonkinensis plantation forest, there are some problems as follows,

1. Can erosion of soils under Styrax tonkinensis forest reduce the soil fertility, so that long-term management of Styrax forest can not be applied?

2. If in fact there is erosion at a severe level, can we take measures to control it in order to ensure adequate production of Styrax tonkinensis forest to meet the requirement for supplying raw material for the paper industry?

In order to answer suitably these questions, investigations must be done over some rotations. Our investigation was done in the first 3 years (1974 – 1976) of first -rotation Styrax tonkinensis plantation at Cauhai (Vinhphu) and Tuquan (Hatuyen) in the central area of raw material supplying for the paper industry.

METHODS

Using direct measurement, build a pool of 200m2 at the end of a primary water flow and with indirect measurement, use Molostkov’s liner to measure erosion.
