INTRODUCTION

Acacia is a plant genus belonging to Legumirosae family and Mimosoidae sub-family, with about 1200 species having distribution in Asia, Africa, America and Oceanea. In the last 20 years in tropical Asia, Acacia species have played a very important role in afforestation programmes, especially Australian acacias such as Acacia auriculiformis and A. mangium.

In the early 1960s, almost 20 Acacia species originating from Australia were introduced into Vietnam for trialling, however, only A. auriculiformis has became an important planting species, especially in the southern provinces. Recently, A.mangium has been used in trials and also selected for planting in many areas.

Vietnam tends to use the wood of Acacia species as raw material for the paper industry and the planned area for planting acacias is increasing in the coming years at a rate of about 10,000-15,000 ha/yr. They can supply wood for export and have a goot soil and environment protection effect, therefore the Government is encouraging people to plant more acacias.
