INTRODUCTION

Pines are the main species for planting on bare hill soils of our country at present. To find some pine species with fast growth and adaptability to certain soil and climatic conditions is an important step in increasing the effectiveness of a planting programme.

This research subject investigates the growth situation of P.kesiya and P.merkusii with various provenances, P.caribaea and P.massoniana. Pines were sown in bags having the same fertilizer treatment.

RESULTS AND REMARKS

– Due to some anatomical and morphological characteristics, the three -needled pine of Hagiang is a variety of P.kesiya and can be determined as P.kesiya Royle ex Gordon var. Hagianensis .

– P.kesiya, P.massoniana and P.caribaea all belong to the fast-growing group in nursery (10 month old seedlings in 1977 were 20-30 cm high and 4.2-6.8 big in diameter). P. merkusii belongs to the slow-growing group in nursery (10 months old seedlings in 1977 could reach 4.7-7.8 cm height and 5.6-7.1 mm diameter).
