Project: “Research on cultivar selection and silvicultural techniques of Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) intensive reforestation for supplying large timber in the Northern and Southern Central regions”

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Program: Research topic by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development

Presiding institution: Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences

Implementing institution: Forestry Science Center for Northern Central Vietnam

Project leader: Dr. Pham Xuan Dinh

Implementation period: 2018-2022

TARGETS AND RESEARCH CONTENTS:

Targets:

  • Additional identification of some of the forestry features of the Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) tree.
  • Select 50 plus-trees for the Northern and Southern Central regions (25 trees/region), with high wood yield and quality recognized by localities
  • Initially select at least 02 origins and 5 families/regions with growth potential exceeding 15% of mass-produced varieties at the end of the research project
  • Establish 6 hectares (3 hectares/area) of origin assay combined with posterity assay and establishing a nursery for sexual propagation
  • Building 14 hectares of experimental models of intensive plantations to supply large timber
  • Additionally develop and complete 01 technical procedure of propagation and intensive afforestation of the Huynh tree to supply large timber (sawlog) to the central provinces to ensure that the yield of plantations at least exceeds 15% compared to the current procedure (recognizing at least 01 technical process on propagation of the Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) tree).

Research contents:

Content 1: Assessing the current situation of Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) plantation.

Content 2: Study further on some forest ecology characteristics of the Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) tree.

Content 3: Study of seed physiology, methods of seed preservation and completing propagation techniques from seeds

Content 4: Research on selecting plus-trees and cultivar testing

Content 5: Research on intensive afforestation techniques for large-timber (sawlog) supply

Content 6: Develop a technical procedure of propagation and intensive afforestation of the Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) tree.

Key results:

Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) is a native tree species, large timber, fast-growing tree, with a wide ecological margin, wood is attractive for the market for high value sawlog. This is a very promising tree species for the plantations of large timber production in some ecoregions of our country.  Some existing Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) plantation models in the provinces of the Northern and Southern Central regions, the models do not show high productivity or high quality due to the lack of good seed sources, propagation, and intensive planting techniques in the direction of large-timber-production. This research project aims to select promising Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) cultivar (origins, families) for high yields, and complete the system of intensive plantation techniques to provide large timber (sawlog) in the Northern and Southern Central provinces.

This research project has selected 50 plus-trees and has established 6ha for cultivar testing in Quang Tri province (3ha) and Quang Nam province (3ha). Initially, 2 origins (Quang Binh province and Quang Tri province) were identified for the Northern Central region, 02 origins (Quang Binh province and Quang Nam province) for the Southern Central region, and 9 families with growth potential exceeding 15% compared to mass-produced varieties.

This research project has developed 01 complete technical procedure of propagation from the Huynh (Tarrietia javanica Blume) seeds, which is recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as a new technical procedure according to Decision No. 223/QD-TCLN&HTQT dated 17/08/2022.

This research project has established 14 hectares of experimental models and completed a system of intensive plantation techniques to provide large timber (sawlog) to improve the added value of production planted forests from the stage of selecting locations, varieties, amount of fertilizer, planting techniques, and some other techniques of maintenance and nurture.

The results of the research project will help the presiding institution have more scientific data sources, experimental forest fields to monitor and evaluate for long-term research. The results of scientific research on trees with an integrated approach towards intensive cultivation of large wood (sawlog) supply will bring higher efficiency than before. In addition, during the implementation of this research project, the master’s and doctoral training has been integrated and combined, which contribute to improving the capacity of staff for the research institutions.
