Forest Science Institute of VietnamCashew nut oil contains phenols with unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. There are approximately 10 -15% of oil in cashew nuts. Preliminary research results show that cashew nut oil is a preventive against forest product harming-insects. This article presents research results to improve the preventative effect of cashew nut oil with chlorine gas and using activated cashew nut oil to produce forest product preservatives in order to expand the variety of forest product preservatives from environmentally-friendly floral origin.

Materials and method

Cashew nut oil is extracted according to heat treatment method

Coptotermes formosanus is used in experiments

High performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectra (HPLC-MS)

“Experimental process for effect of forest product preservative to termites” is used to evaluate effect of preparation formulas from cashew nut oil.

Research to determine change in chemical composition of cashew nut oil after chlorination by chlorine gas

The analytical results on the chemical composition of cashew nut oil before and after chlorination with chlorine gas shows that:

+ A small number of derivatives from cashew nut oil react with chlorine

+ Chemical molecules of cashew nut oil have a branch which may react with chlorine. However, the benzene ring is not impacted. Based on the structure of these compounds to specify Chlorine atom has been added into 7 positions with dual link in the branch.

+ Most molecules of cashew nut oil remain intact after activation process

Research on using cashew nut oil after activating to produce forest product preparation

+ Cashew nut oil after activation is diluted in diesel solvent at a concentration of 9% to produce a forest product preservative

preparation in liquid oil which is effective to termite prevention when preserving timber with seepage amount of preservative from 100 – 150gram/m2.

+ Forest product preservative preparation from cashew nut oil has been evaluated that it has a good possibility of seepage into forest products, low metal erosion level and gains allowable limits in environmental safety.

Research results have specified chemical compounds of cashew nut oil after chlorination with chlorine gas. Forest product preservative preparation in liquid oil with main active elements are cashew nut oil and diesel solvents has been produced. Some properties of preparation have been specified and evaluated to ensure technical, economic and environmental requirements in use as a forest product preservation.
