I. Introduction

Bamboos are fast growing plants. They have been closely associated with the people from long ago as they provide fuel, house construction material, tools for daily life and production, means for cultural activities. In mountainous regions, bamboo is present in almost all economic, cultural and daily life activities. Prompted by the idea of searching a bamboo- based material as substitute for wood but cheaper than wood and can be industrially manufactured as house construction material for people in the mountainous regions, some researches and trials on producing bamboo board for house floor, wall surface combining bamboo and veneer have been conducted such as: the research on pilot production of Dendrocalamus membranaceus board for house floor and chair components (Tran Thuy Ky); research on pilot production of 2, 3- layered bamboo board with wooden core for house floor, wall surface with UF + Lignin glue (Nguyen Van Thong); research on gluing bamboo that has been treated to maintain natural colour to make 4-layered, 6mm thick plywood with moisture resistant glue P.F (Phenol formaldehyde) for wall – surface board 400 x 900 x 9 (mm) (Le Van Thanh). The above research works all give rise to products combining preservative- treated bamboo, wood or veneer and glue. Each product, however, does manifest its weak points and can not be yet accepted as commodity on market and also the researchers have not dealt with physical, mechanical and technological properties of those products.

Inheriting research results obtained by former authors, we work out the research subject “Research on using 3-layered pressed bamboo board as substitute for wooden board in the house of people in Northern Vietnam mountainous areas”. The objectives are:

+ Manufacturing bamboo board combined with veneer, using non – toxic glue UF. The board is preservative treated to have colour closely similar to natural colour of bamboo, suitable to the liking of ethnic minority people in mountainous regions.

+ Research on size of the board suitable to the house structure of the ethnic minority people in keeping with the standard newly promulgated by the Ministry of Construction.
