Vietnam has been extensively explored for botanical specimens and ecological understanding. Plant specimens are housed in a number of international herbaria but the information on the taxonomy of Vietnamese bamboos is very limited. The systematic study of bamboos is a very difficult task due to unpredictable and sudden flowering and scarce seed production. Most of the works are based on very few morphological characteristics. For these reasons it is important to continue to study bamboo taxonomy in Vietnam.

Field work: Investigate, collect specimen: Based on collected data, sentinel investigation and filled designed questionnaire. Plants specimens are pressed, dried, processed, and stuck to paper according to specimen making method.

Laboratory: Identify scientific names: mainly based on morphology characteristics. In addition to observation, analysis, and comparison of specimen in lab, field observation method is also used. Organize conference on unity of result of Bambuseae classification.

Research on Bamboos classification in Vietnam has record 40 main bamboo species with Vietnamese name and Latin name. Lồ ô Trung bộ (Bambusa balcooa Roxb.); Lộc ngộc (Bambusa  bicorniculata sp. nov.); Tre gai (Bambusa blumeana J. A. et J. H. Schult); Mạy bói (Bambusa burmanica Gamble); Dùng phấn (Bambusa chungii McClure); Hóp đá (Bambusa dissemulator McClure); Lùng (Bambusa  longissima sp. nov.); Hóp củ chi (Bambusa mutabilis  McClure); Lục trúc (Bambusa oldhami Munro); Lồ ô (Bambusa procera A. Result of studies on Bamboos classification has recorded 40 main bamboo species in Vietnam (Vietnam name and Latin name). Bambusa and Dendrocalamus are the principal genera of large stature bamboos found in Vietnam.
