INTRODUCTION

In order to plant Styrax tonkinensis on a large scale, to achieve high productivity and long-term management and to ensure raw material supply for industry, the three following problems relating to the field of pedology must be solved,

* Determination of the requirement of Stryrax trees on soil, to serve as a basis for planning and designing work.

* Formation of site classification for planting Styrax which can serve to determine planting sites and suitable planting and tending techniques.

* Investigating and understanding changes of soil fertility after each rotation and investigating the best management mode from a soil rehabilitation point of view.

In the years from 1966 to 1968, the first problem was investigated, but due to changes in selecting species for paper raw materials, investigation was stopped with some preliminary conclusions. According to a new decision to again use Styrax tonkinensis as raw material for the paper industry, in the years from 1973 to 1977, concentrated study was carried out on the above 3 problems in the central area of raw material supply for the paper industry.
