INTRODUCTION

The questions is after exploiting the first rotation Styrax tonkinensis forests, can new Styrax forests be established? and by what techniques?

Research was carried out at Yen Bai province from 1971. Ten -twelve year old Styrax tonkinensis plantation forests having average heights of 18-22m, average diameter of 17-18cm (D1.3) total production of 50-100m3 were selected for study. There was vegetation including shrubs, Saccharum arundinaceum, Miscanthus sinensis and small bamboos (Neohouzeauna) under the forest. That was the common Styrax forest type in which people prepare to harvest the first rotation.

METHODS AND RESEARCH CONTENT

After clear cutting Styrax tonkinensis trees, experiments on regeneration for the second rotation were conducted with the following techniques:

– Vegetation treatment: One part of the vegetation was burnt and taken away and the other part the was taken away without burning.

– Soil preparation: for soils having dense vegetation with Miscanthus sinensis etc. after vegetation treatment, roots of such plants must be dug . Size of planting holes was 40 x 40 x 30cm.
