Research on casuarina equisetifolia

Phi Quang Dien

In Vietnam, scientific studied on Casuarina have commenced only recently. Studied on planting technique in southern Quang Binh and Tuy Phong were carried out by Prof. Lam Cong Dinh and the results are presented in section 2.1. Studied on genetic improvement and propagation have just started and are summarised below.

1. Cutting propagation

C. equisetifoliacan be vegetatively propagated by air layering (Haraliap, 1972). Vegetative propagation through rooted cuttings of this species has been reported by Somasundar and Jadadees (1977), Hussain and Ponnuswamy (1980), Rao (1989), and Pupl Sunil (1990).

In 1965 some people in Ninh Binh province produced C. equisetifolia stock by airlayering from 3-5 year old trees ( Bui Cong Tich, 1965). Dr. Duong Mong Hung presented results obtained from his research on rooting of C.equisetifolia at the forest college. Cuttings taken from the ramicorns of 16-18 year old trees were treated with IAA (indole acetic acid) and IAB (indole butyric acid). Greater success was achieved with cuttings treated with IBA and 76.6% success was obtained at the concentration of 200 ppm.

Prof. Dr. Le Dinh Kha carried out some experiments on cutting propagation for C.equisetifolia in the glasshouse of the Research Centre of Forest Tree Improvement (Chem, Tu Liem, Hanoi) in 1991 and 1992.

In these experiments cuttings were taken from branches of one year old and 25 year old trees and ramicorns of 25 year old trees.

These cuttings were treated with different concentrations of auxins (IAA, IBA) and dihornmones 1,2,3 in liquid and powder forms.
