I. Introduction

Essential oils, in particular those known as cajeput oils, have widely been used in the making of drugs and cosmetics. The cajeput oil extracted from a number of Melaleuca spp is used in the preparation of pharmaceuticals because of its strong antiseptic and antiphlogistic properties, when used in chirapsia to remove pains and virulence as it contains a high amount of 1.8 cineol. Besides, the oil can be used for the making of cosmetics as it is also rich in terpinel 4 – ol. The sulphate soil area of the Mekong Delta for ages has been famous for its production of cajeput essential oil mainly extracted from the local M. cajuputi, which however is rated as a poor oil producer in terms of both its yeilds and quality.

A further step of much relevance to all local formers of the area is to find out cajeput species and provenances that can provide higher yields and better quality of oils. As a result, a research project has been formulated and then carried out by the Southern Branch of Forest Science Institute at its station of Thanh Hoa – Long An, to deal with the cultivation of cajeputs and not the least to find out the cajeput species and provenances that can provide the highest yields and quality of essential oils.
