The Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) is a certification scheme designed for woody biomass used in industrial, large-scale energy production. SBP has developed a certification scheme to ensure that woody biomass is from legal and sustainable origin, allowing biomass producers to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements, at a minimum.
Supporting Vietnamese biomass producers in implementing SBP certification to meet European requirements for biomass energy, the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences (VAFS) has coordinated with the Sustainable Biomass Programme (SBP) to conduct the report on Regional Risk Assessment for Vietnam according to SBP Standard 1 – Version v2.0: Feedstocks Compliance. After 5 months of implementation, the VAFS has organized two consultation workshops on ” Regional Risk Assessment for Vietnam according to SBP Standard 1 – Version v2.0″ in Hanoi on August 27, 2024 and in Ho Chi Minh City on September 23, 2024 to consult with stakeholders on the report as a basis to support the implementation of SBP standards.
Figure 1. Prof. Dr. Vo Dai Hai, President of VAFS, delivered the opening speech at the workshop in Ho Chi Minh City.
Attending the two workshops were nearly 80 delegates who are representative for management agencies (MARD); biomass producers; certification bodies such as GFA, SGS, Bureau Veritas, Preffered by Nature, TUV SUD; associations such as Vietnam Forest Owners Association, Vietnam Cooperative Alliance, Vietnam Forestry Science and Technology Association, Vietnam Rubber Association; non-governmental organizations such as WWF, CORENARM; research institutes, universities, experts in the field of sustainable forest management and other stakeholders.
At the workshop, delegates listened to 02 presentations on (i) Introduction to the SBP Sustainable Biomass Program and (ii) Summary of content, methodology and findings of the Regional Risk Assessment report according to SBP standards. After the presentations, the delegates were divided into 02 discussion groups to provide detailed comments on the risk assessment content for 42 indicators of SBP standard 1 – V2.0.
Concluding the workshop, Prof. Dr. Vo Dai Hai highly appreciated the active participation of the delegates in discussing and providing comments on the report content. On behalf of the working group, Prof. Hai acknowledged the contribution from experts and stakeholders to revise and complete the report to ensure quality and practical application.
