I. Introduction
According to the project of planting 5 million hectares of forest from now to the year 2010 of the Government, South Vietnam provinces must plant about 377,800 hectares of forest and the Central Highlands must plant about 495,000ha of forest… Annually, the provinces must plant mean 40,000 ha of forest and tens million scattered trees with native tree species such as Hopea sp., Dipterocarpus sp., Amisoptera cochinchinensis, Pterocarpus macrocarpus, Sindora cochinchinensis Michelia, Canarium sp., Pinus sp., Cassia siamea, Rhizophora apiculata, Melaleuca sp. and the exotic species such as acacias eucalypts. Seed requirement for forest planting plan in these regions is very great. At present, the capability of seed supply of the above mentioned species from seed stands, seed orchards so far established can not meet the requirement. According to statistics by the Central Seed Company, the seed supply from these seed stands can meet only 15 – 20% of the demand, the remaining seed supply is mainly collected from natural forest or forest plantation of which many seed lots are mass – collected with inferior and uncontrolled quality. This causes no less ill- effect on productivity and quality of forest plantation and in many places even with low survival rate and no forests are created. To overcome this situation together with the pushing forward the tree improvement programme and establishment of high quality seed orchards, there must be an immediate establishment of seed stands converted from production forests to timely supply good quality seed for forest planting. Prompted by that fact, the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD) has approved the project: Survey and selection of good forest stands for conversion into seed stands in South Vietnam provinces and the Central Highlands”. The FSIV was assigned main manager of the project with the coordination of some organizations attached to the MARD and the locaties in the project region.
