I. Introduction

Eucalypt species are among main forest tree species in many countries in the world. Up to 1990s, the area planted with eucalypt species outside their distribution range in 90 countries amounted to over 4 million hectares. Eucalypt wood is used as timber, paper and composite board raw material. Eucalypts are also planted as landscape and environment amenities. Through over a decade, Vietnam scientists have conducted many researches on Eucalypts such as: Seed sources, planting techniques, intensive management of various Eucalypt species, aiming at finding out suitable species, specific technical measures in seed sowing, planting site selection, land preparation techniques, forest tending.

In Vietnam, E. microcorys was introduced in the 1950s. It was planted in Cam Ly, Lang Hanh (Lam Dong Province) in 1960. Small populations of this species show good growth with fine stem form, productivity from 12 to 14m3/ha/year and the luxuriant undergrowth exerts good effect on the environment. In contribution to finding out suitable planted species in different ecological zones and suitable forest planting technique serving the need to establish forest plantations in the Central Highlands provinces, we have carried out the research subject “Establishment of E.microcorys forest plantation model in the Central Highland”.

The objective of the research subject: Preliminarily finding out suitable ecological zones and suitable silvicutural measures to expand the establishment of E.mycrocorys plantations in the Central highland and working out technical procedures for seedling production. Only results in 2-4 years are evaluated at the experimental sites representing given ecological conditions and a definite site type. Besides, the experiment was carried out only at species level, no provenances trial was intended. Thus, the content of the research is as follows:

– Survey and final review of the results obtained in the established E. microcorys plantations now existing in the Central Highlands.

– Trial planting of E. microcorys plantation model in some ecological zones in the Central Highlands, monitoring and supplementing some main silvicultural techniques in establishment of forest plantation.

– Techniques of seedlings production in nursery and green – house.
