INTRODUCTION

In Huulung area (Langson province), there are two soil types which occupy a considerable area, they are:

* Bare hill land which was rehabilitated with Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Melastoma dodecandrum, Cratoxylum cochinchinensis and Liquidambar formosana. Soil is poor with stone pieces.

* Degraded forest land due to frequent burning for agriculture cultivation. Surface layer is thin; poor and dry; vegetation contains drought-tolerant, short shrubs and Eupatorium odoratum which covers sparsely.

These two soil types were not used for tree planting in Huulung nor were they used for any other purpose in forest production.

The problem is that research must be carried out to find how to use these two soil types in forest management. The solution must be based on the success of natural forest rehabilitation in order to choose suitable species and to use some silvicultural techniques to establish the forest.

METHODS AND CONTENT

Liquidambar formosana is a light-prefering, drought-tolerant species which can also tolerate poor soil and can form natural stands where Erythrophloeum fordii and other tree species can also be found.

It aims to use Liquidambar formosana as a pioneering tree species and after some years, Erythrophloeum fordii can be planted in mixture in order to form a forest type containing two main species.
