RESULTS SUMMARY:

The project determined 28 insect pest species, in which there are 18 pest species in nurseries and 28 species in plantation and natural orchards. The wood-borer Bacchisa medioviolacea is identified as a major new pest of Docynia indica orchards. There are 15 fungi species damaging Docynia indica trees in nurseries and orchards. The fruit rot of Docynia indica is identified as the main disease in orchards caused by Colletotrichum siamense. Notably, the project identified and recorded one new fungal species Phytophthora docynia.

The life cycle of Bacchisa medioviolacea extends over two years (721.7 days ± 17.6 days). The average of adult, egg, larvae and pupae stages were recorded 17.6 days, 27.5 days, 627.3 days and 48.9 days, respectively. The wood-borer Bacchisa medioviolacea damaged mostly in the orchard over 10-years-olds.

The fruit rot of Docynia indica is identified by a fungal species Colletotrichum siamense which grows in the optimal temperature 20oC – 25 oC; severely damagad in July and August anually in the orchard over 10-years-olds.

The project determined the control measures of Bacchisa medioviolacea in Son La, Yen Bai, Lao Cai provinces, including silviculture with clearing understorey, pruning  and fertilizing with 500g NPK fertilizer (16 -16 – 8S) each tree, handling measure to kill egg and 1st & 2nd larvae by shape knife and insect net for adult when flying. The project demonstrated the effectiveness of insecticides reaching more than 80 percent in controlling Bacchisa medioviolacea, whith biological agents such as Abamectin (Abatimec 3.6EC,…) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki 16.000 IU/mg + Granulosis virus 108 PIB (Bitadin WP,…); and chemical insecticides namely Cypermethrin (Sherbush 25EC,…) and  Etofenprox (Trebon 10EC,…).

The project also determined the control measures of rot fruit in Son La, Yen Bai, Lao Cai provinces, including silviculture with clearing undersotrey, pruning and fertilizing with 500g NPK fertiliser (16 -16 – 8S) each tree. The project indicated the effectiveness of fungicides reaching more than 80 percent in controlling the rot fruit disease, with biological agents such as Trichoderma harzianum (Zianum 1.00wp,…) and Trichoderma viride (Biobus 1.00wp,…); and some active ingridients namely Difenoconazole (Score 250EC,…) and Mancozeb (Unizebando 800WP,…).

The project established three  2-hectares trials of integrated management in Son La, Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces, in which the control effectiveness reaches more than 80% and economic effectiveness of more than 15%.

The project hosted three training courses with 30 households for each course, which transformed the technical process of integrated management in Son La, Yen Bai, Lao Cai provinces. Furthermore, the local officers of Forest Protection Department and Plant Protection Department paticipated in the training courses.
