Mid-term Workshop of the AFoCO Project “Improving Pinus caribaea Morelet for plantation on degraded land in Viet Nam’s Northern mountainous region”

On 27 June 2022, in Ha Noi city, Viet Nam, The Forest Science Centre of North-Eastern Viet Nam (FSNE), under the Vietnamese Academy of Forestry Sciences (VAFS), organized the Mid-term Workshop of the AFoCO Project “Improving Pinus caribaea Morelet for plantation on degraded land in Viet Nam’s Northern mountainous region” funded by the Asian Forestry Cooperation Organization (AFoCO). The workshop was held to review the progress and achievements of the Project, also to discuss the implementation plan towards the end of the Project.

The workshop received more than 30 participants, representing for Viet Nam Administration of Forestry, Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences, Sub-Department of Forest Protection of Vinh Phuc province, North East College of Agriculture and Forestry, FSNE, and other organizations participating in the implementation of the Project. Especially, the Workshop welcomed the participation of Ms. Cha Jiyea, AFoCO Secretariat (online). The Workshop was co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Vo Dai Hai, President of VAFS, and Dr. Luu Tien Dat, National Focal Point, VNFOREST.

Speaking at the opening of the Workshop, Dr. Le Minh Cuong, Director of FSNC, and Dr. Luu Tien Dat, VNFOREST both emphasized the role and importance of the Project in supporting the promotion of forest restoration on degraded land in the Northern mountainous region by high quality P. caribaea varieties/cultivars and suitable silvicultural techniques, and at the same time strengthen research and seed management capacity for staff of FSNE and related organizations.

The participants of the workshop were very interested in three presentations: i) Overview of the project, achievements and workplan for follow-up activities; ii) Technical process of breeding P. caribaea Morelet; and iii) Some technical advances in the production of plywood and peeled boards using wood of Pinus caribaea.

The Workshop discussed and agreed on the progress and achievements of the Project, plan and process to implement the following-up activities to meet the project objectives, detailed as follows:

  • The implemented activities were kept ontrack as planned to meet the objectives of the Project, despite the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic;
  • The Project Management Board needs to review and complete the products, develop a communication and publication plan to promote the results of the Project at domestically and abroad;
  • The Project Management Board needs to prepare for the mid-term evaluation of the AFoCO Secretariat, also to prepare for the implementation plan of 2023 that to be discussed at the PSC meeting proposed to be organized at the end of 2022.

The project “Improving Pinus caribaea Morelet for plantation on degraded land in Viet Nam’s Northern mountainous region” funded by AFoCO, by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development approved and assigned to FSNE to own the project according to Decision No. 120/QD-BNN-HTQT dated January 7, 2020 and Decision No. 992/QD-BNN-HTQT dated March 20, 2020. The Project has been implemented from 2020-2023 with the goal of developing P. caribaea plantations on degraded land in the northern mountainous region through increasing capacity to produce high-quality seeds and developing planting technical guidelines. intensive farming, and the technology of processing and preserving P. caribaea wood is in line with the requirements of the market, contributing to the supply of raw materials for the wood processing industry./.
