Forestry Certification Workshop 2014 on 8 December 2014 at Hanoi, Vietnam

These days, the increasing demand for forestry materials and products is raising the public’s awareness about these materials and products’ sustainability. The issues of global warming, which are emerging alongside the issues of climate change, deforestation, and illegal logging, are concerning people across the globe.

In recent years, focus on forestry-based industries, as one of the leading causes of deforestation globally has grown. However, in reality, the existence of a viable and sustainable forestry-based industry can contribute to the economy in many ways: by the creation of jobs in rural and urban areas, by empowering small holders, and by contributing to the overall economic growth.

All countries of the world, including Vietnam, develop their natural resources to enrich the lives of their peoples, and as long as such development happens in a sustainable manner, the results can be accepted and enjoyed by anyone, including future generations.  Forestry certification helps to provide such assurance to all stakeholders: government, industry, and customers.

Forestry Certification Workshop 2014 will be jointly organized by the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) on 8 December 2014 at Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Workshop aimed at the following objectives:

  • Introduce to stakeholders information about PEFC, including global activities and progress made in the Asian region
  • Discuss the current status of forestry certification in Vietnam
  • Identify areas of potential collaboration between PEFC and stakeholders in Vietnam
