Canarium tramdenum Dai& Yakovl is a big tree with multiple uses, both for protecting and economic purposes. Successful grafting of Canarium tramdenum will shorten flowering and fruiting period, creating planting materials which meet the requirements of forest management businessmen.

– Applying PRA to collect information and dominant trees

– Following the Standard QPN 15 – 93 on techniques of establishing seed plantation and seed garden issued 02/11/1993 by the Ministry of Forestry, current Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to select dominant tree.

– Applying Randomized Complete Block design with 3 replicates to develop trials of different treatments in Yen Thanh – Nghe An and Tan lac – Hoa Binh.

Designing field experiments to test grafting methods and grafting seasons

Selecting mother trees

Ten mother trees were selected to get materials for vegetative propagation following the surveys in Ninh Binh, Ha Tay,Thai Nguyen and Bac Giang.

Propagating by grafting

* Grafting methods: The success rate from approach grafting methods was higher than that from wedge grafting, especially in spring the success rate was 54% with approach grafting whereas it is only 50.2% with wedge grafting.

* Grafting season: With the same grafting method, the highest graft success rate was obtained in spring. The average rate was 52%, especially reaching 54% in one year.

Research on the techniques of producing Canarium tramdenum for timber:

– After 1 year of planting, there was no significant difference in height and diameter of plants between treatments.

– Treatment Canrium tramdenum + Tephrosia candida resulted highest average values after 3 years with (Doo)= 5,58cm; Hvn = 3,00 m.

Outcomes from establishing plantation trials of Canarium tramdenum for fruits (using grafted seedling):

Survival rate: The survival rate was above 90% in all trials after one year, however the rates were reduce to 82 and 86% in Nghe An and 90% in Hoa Binh in 2007 (after 3 years)

– Growth: The diameter and height of the plants in 2 trials in Tan Lạc – Hoa Binh and Yen Thanh – Nghe An were progressing well (Doo = 3,5 – 3,85cm; Hvn = 1,56 – 1,68m)

Canarium tramdenum can be propagated by grafting. Approach grafting and wedge grafting are two methods which yield the best results. Spring (March, April) and autumn (September, October) are the best seasons for grafting.

Establishing plantation forests using seedlings obtained from seeds and complete planting using supporting plants in the early stage are appropriate for population growth of Canarium tramdenum for timber.

– In the period of 1 – 4 years, Canarium tramdenum plantations need shading by other plants to support growth and development. The best shading plants is Tephrosia candida.

– Establishing plantation forest using grafted seedlings and using agro-forestry approach is appropriate for fruit- purpose plantation
