In the project framework of Jatropha development for feedstock and biodiesal production in Vietnam (2007-2010) so far, 24 Jatropha provenances, of which 18 imported and 6 local ones have been selected and tested in different ecological zones in Vietnam.

Forty eight candidate plus trees (CPT) of Jatropha have been analyzed and qualified for selection from the wild population with seed yields from 2.8-5.0kg per plant per year and oil content in seed weight ranging from 25.0- 39.5%; another 37 CPTs (TL, BT, DL & IN provenances) have been selected from plantation populations in a trail plantation in Ninh Thuan with a seed yield in year 1 from 0.5 -1.2kg/plant.

Jatropha in provenance testing trials in semi arid sandy areas of Ninh Thuan showed very good growth, first fruiting at 5-6 months after planting, and a large variation in seed yield in the first year from provenance to provenance (30-437kg/ha 14 times difference).

The provenances of BT-AM1, BT-nonAM, TL-AM2 and IN-AM1 were considered as the most promising ones regarding their growth and seed yield after one year. The application of AM inoculants to the Jatropha in Ninh Phuoc, Ninh Thuan has increased the number of fruit-bearing plants in year 1 up to 26% and seed yield up to 28%-60% as compared to their controls (p=0.95).
