I. INTRODUCTION

Dendrocalamus membranaceusis a species of the Bambusaceae family, which grows in clumps with a high growth rate. During one night, bamboo shoots can reach up to 0.6 – 0.7m and after 45 days, bamboo trees can attain a height of 18-20m with a breast height diameter of 10-12 cm and a fresh weight of 35-40kgs. After two years, they can be harvested for the paper industry, to supply electric poles, gutters, house pillars and other products.

This native species has been widely planted in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces and is planted in the Vinh Phu paper raw material area as well as in other provinces.

However, the species has no seed, or seeds show very low germination (Pham Van Tich, 1964). After flowering, all clumps will die. Therefore, propagation of this species is done mainly by vegetative means.
