Characteristics of soil for Pinus merkusii forest plantation and effect of the latter on forest soil fertility (1980 – 1984)

Dr. Ngo Que

INTRODUCTION

For nearly 30 years we have carried out the planting of P. merkusii on a large scale, on tens of thousands of hectares, but the ratio of established plantations remains small. Plantation quality is uneven and unstable.

The choice and use of land for P. merkusii forest planting and management have remained a great problem with a regard to concrete policy and the approach of the forestry branch in the past years.

Problems arise namely: what is the cause of many of the difficulties often encountered in our country in P. merkusii planting? Which soil factors have a decisive effect on the performance and productivity of the plantations? What is the effect of P. merkusii plantations on the soil?

The aim of this research is to contribute towards a solution of the above problems and also to find technical measures for the selection and rational utilization of the land for P. merkusii plantation establishment and management and improvement of the plantation quality.
