Activities of OFTs

Objectives

An on-farm trial (OFT) is generally defined as an indispensable tool for developing and validating technology applied by local people (farmers).

In the RENFODA Project, the OFT aims at evaluating the biological, technical, socio-economic, institutional, policy-related feasibility of improved technology on farmers’ fields, and making recommendations to the 661 Programme. In detail, the OFT is i) to assess the problems and constraints of the 661 Program at the operational level (i.e., the reality of the 661 Program), both in terms of implementation procedure and technical aspectsand ii) to initiate the field verification of existing techniques on forest rehabilitation and farmland management to have high potential for field adaptation.

Activities

In accordance with the attributes of the OFT and project outputs, the component spares numerous time for planning processes; e.g. baseline survey, participatory rural appraisal (PRA), study tour, participatory activity framework development (PAFD), development of plan of operations (POs).

Activities being carried out vary village by village but the focal area is related to forestry; e.g. forest plantation, enrichment planting, forest and home garden development, etc. Other activities which are regarded as ‘incentive activities’ including animal husbandry (cow/buffalo, pig, goat), beekeeping, animal stall construction, compost tank construction, etc.

Management

One of the significant features of the OFT is that there are many stakeholders at different levels except for the donor (JICA); e.g. Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV), Sub-Department of Forestry Development of Hoa Binh Province (Sub-DFD), Da River Forestry Enterprise, Da River Watershed Management Board, Agriculture and Forestry Extension Center of Hoa Binh Province, Agriculture and Forestry Extension stations of districts, commune extension workers.

A working group (WG) is founded for the OFT with the staff dispatched from the above institutions and a JICA long-term expert, and the WG is basically responsible to carry out all the activities with occasional collaboration with local consultants as well as JICA short-term experts.
