1. Temporary method proposed for assessment of yield of Acacia hybrid plantations in Eastern South Vietnam
Pham The Dung, Ho Van Phuc
Acacia hybrids have been, and continue to be, widely planted in South Vietnamese provinces. In the future, acacia hybrids will be one of the main species for industrial plantation establishment. For forest management and information on stocking and yield, a yield table or model for yield estimation is essential. Until now, such information has been lacking. To solve this problem, the author conducted research, proposing a temporary method for stock inventory aimed at estimation of yield of Acacia hybrid plantations in eastern South Vietnam. The results show that this method can be applied in practice.
2. Marketing of forest products from forest plantations in mountainous regions of North Vietnam and policies for market development
Vo Dai Hai
Some problems remain to be solved in the marketing of forest products from forest plantations in provinces of North Vietnam. After analysing some common characteristics of forest products from plantations in these provinces the author makes some recommendations on development of a forest products market in these regions.
3. Demarcation of protection zones in the sandy coastal region of Northern Central Vietnam
Dang Van Thuyet
Taking into account the main harmful and harming factors, at both high and less dangerous levels, 5 critical zones are demarcated: the shifting sand zone newly formed near the seashore (outside)(I); the swiftly shifting sand zone in the middle (II); the fixed sand zone with villages along the coast (outside)(III); fixed sand dune zone adjacent to the fields (IV); and the interspersed fixed, low sand dune zone (V).
Zones I and II have no vegetation cover and are severely threatened by shifting sand. These zones govern the critical level of the remaining zones. The critical levels of zones III, IV and V are weak due to less shifting sand but these zones are more threatened by sand moving and are linked with the population and agricultural cultivation thus a sufficient system of wind-break belts must be established against wind, heat and sand movement.
4. Reasons why the policy on the right of households and individuals to enjoy benefits from forests (Decision 178) is late coming into effect
Vu Long
The policy on the right of allocated households to enjoy benefits from forests (178) promulgated in 2001 has still not been widely applied. The reason is that the circular of guidance on the interministerial decision of the Agriculture and Rural Development and Finance ministries was promulgated two years late. Moreover, some points of the circular seem to cause difficulties for the carrying out of the decision. The benefits of the households are not ensured as they are in Decision 178. At the same time, the complexity of forest constitutes a difficulty to the implementation of the policy. There must be more open policy on forest management and products of natural forest so that households may really enjoy benefits from forest and actively participate in forest protection and development.
5. Identification of some physical properties of bamboo based on small test samples devoid of defects.
6. Developing a preliminary classification system on the present use of forest using the data from satellite images at the upstream protected watershed of Da River, Vietnam.
7. Research results on the gender role in firewood collection and use in Khang Ninh commune- buffer zone of Ba Be National Park
Le Thu Hien and Vo Dai Hai
The International Foundation for Science granted financial support to the Forest Science Institute of Vietnam for implementation of the project: ”Survey and assessment of the fire wood demand and possible firewood supply in Khang Ninh commune – The buffer zone of Ba Be National Park” with gender and the firewood problem as one of the main research subjects. The study found that the females in the study area, especially the wives, must see to the fuel for the family from collection, preservation, drying, storage and use of firewood. Thus in research, recommendation of measures or any intervention from outside for solution of the firewood problem, the important role of gender must be taken into consideration, together with the difference between various regions.
8. Effect of water regime on growth of Endospermum chinensis Benth seedlings
Dang Thinh Trieu
The effect of watering regime on growth of Endospermum chinensis Benth at the nursery stage was studied over four months. At the end of the experiment, growth and biomass of the seedlings were best with the formula which provided 100% of water requirement. The height/root collar diameter ratio of the seedling decreased with lesser watering while the weight of roots/stem weight ratio was increased.
