Summary

This survey was carried out by means of randomly selected 5 x 5 m sample plots. Advantages of natural regeneration compared to plantations in the project area are summarized as follows: Natural regenerated stands show a high species diversity. They consist of tree species suited to soil and climatic conditions. Natural regenerated stands include a sufficient percentage of trees with useful timber and they are able to provide quick benefits to farmers through fuel wood harvesting. Natural regeneration is a very cost effective and labor extensive way of reestablishing forest. For comparison, the investment of the 327-program for plantations is at least 2.3 million VND. Re-establishment of forest by means of natural regeneration has low risk of failure. The stands ensure very effective soil watershed protection.
