Melaleuca cajuputi is a tree species popularly planted in severe acid sulphate soil in the Mekong River Delta. Intensive management of M. cajuputi forest is a measure much interested by many forest owners now to improve the efficiency of using acid sulphate soil. Factors of intensive management of forest consist of seed selection, land preparation, forest tending… Which factors are decisive in improvement of intensive management of M. cajuputi forest in severe acid sulphate soil in the Mekong River Delta is the problem dealt with in this research- General and long term objective of the research subject is to establish intensive M. cajuputi forest management model in severe acid sulphate soil in the Mekong River Delta. Concrete research objectives in the early stage are:

1. Evaluation of height increment and survival rate of some best provenances (7v05, 1201, 1206, 1207 and 1208) of 2 selected species: M. cajuputi and M.leucadendra.

2. Comparison of height increment of M. cajuputi (7v09) planted with two types of seedlings (bare-rooted seedling and ball-seedlings).

I. Research methods and material

1. Research material

– Two M. cajuputi provenances: 7v05, 7v09 and four M.leucadendra: 1201, 1206, 1207, 1208. List of species and provenances used in the experiment is shown in Table 1.
