Additional research for the selection of main species in use for productive plantation in the North of western Highlands

I. Introduction

A challenge of the researcher involved in the selection of forest tree species is to find out the relations of the plants characteristics to the ecological factors of the sites on which the plants are going to be grown and then to estimate the possible performances of the species to yield the expected economic and social outputs. The task is usually not easy, because a lot trees that thrive well in natural forests, do not do so in plantations where conditions are very often marginal. Only can some species such as Manglietia glauca (Mo), Styrax tonkinensis, Melia azedarach (xoan ta), yield predictable results. Under these conditions, the use of introduced exotics seems to be a ”must” in particular under the present settings. However, doing so, scientists should never neglect further study of indigenous plant/ tree species, because these are assets in tropical forestry.

Besides many other resources, the present project ”Additional research for the selection of main species in use for productive plantation in the North of Western Highlands” was designed to provide technical information on forest tree and site selection in the area for the completion of the programme dealing with 5 million hectares of plantations nation wide. It tries to give practical answers to the commonplace questions of all planers, ”What species and technology should I use to grow trees on the site I am working with” and ” What sites should I need to grow the species they told me grow”.
