Cutting propagation of Dacrydium pierrei for conservation planting

Three simulators, namely IAA, IBA and NAA, have been used to increase the rooting percentage, number of roots per cutting and root length of Dacrydium pierrei cuttings from trees 7–8 and 50 years of age. The species can be easily propagated using cuttings that have a high rooting percentage. This vegetative propagation technique can be used for mass production of planting material for forest planting for gene conservation.

Identification of the larval instars of Hypsipyla robusta through width of the frass

(Nguyen Van Do)

The shoot borer Hypsipyla robusta is an insect which causes great damage to species of the Meliaceae family such as Chukrasia tabularis and Toona sureni. However, control of the borers is very difficult as the larvae live inside the shoots and so are hard to contact with insecticide.

Observations on the biological characteristics of H. robusta show that the chrysalis and first and second instars usually live outside the shoot. If the timing of these stages can be determined it should be possible to control them with insecticides.

Research has been carried out on the correlation between the width of frass and the width of the head capsule of various instars. The results show that quick determination in the field is possible based on the width of the frass. Combined with an understanding of the biological characteristics of H. robusta one can determine the timing of the emergence of the chrysalis and the first and second instars for their effective control.

Growth and morphology of artificial hybrids of Acacia mangium and A. auriculiformis

(Nghiem Quynh Chi)

The main feature of a hybrid is heterosis in the F1 generation. Artificial hybridization (also called controlled pollination) using reciprocal crossing and back crossing has been carried out in Vietnam since 1997 and some hybrid combinations are used as material sources for this study. Research on the morphological characteristics of the hybrid (and clones) reveals that the intermediate nature between A. auriculiformis and A. mangium in width/length index in reciprocal combinations is affected by their cytoplasmic genetic properties. In general, natural and artificial hybrids both have faster growth than their parental species and their provenances. There are especially four artificial hybrid combinations that show obvious heterosis through superior growth than the natural hybrid clones BV16 and BV33. These four artificial hybrid combinations are in the same group as clone BV10, a clone which has the best growth in Vietnam.

Research on the relationship between morphological features of the fruit coat and quality of Xylia xylocarpa seed in sowing

(Vuong Huu Nhi)

The best time to collect seed of X. xulocarpa is when the skin of the fruit turns yellow. The average length, width and thickness of the seed are 15.32–16.12mm; 10.73–11.11mm and 3–3.2mm respectively.

The management of buffer zones and core zones of special use forest areas in Vietnam

(Vo Nguyen Huan)

This paper deals with the management mechanism and management authorities and the relationship between various participants involved in management of conservation areas and buffer zones. After briefly reviewing the responsibilities and rights of related authorities to manage these areas, the author provides some comments and evaluation and expresses the desire for a specialized organization to take charge of the special use forest system for the whole country.

Problems in the marketing of cinnamon in Yen Bai province

(Nguyen Ngoc Quang)

Cinnamomum cassia has long been considered a key tree species in Yen Bai province as it is a high-value industrial crop. C. cassia is also valued for environmental improvement and social welfare, providing employment for agricultural labour in revegetation of bare land and denuded hills, reducing soil erosion and increasing forest cover.

Investigation of the problems in the cinnamon market in Yen Bai and the recommendations made will contribute to improvement of the market in Yen Bai and the whole country.

The hamlet forest in Cao Bang province

(Vu Long)

In recent years, much attention has been paid to management of community forest. Hamlet forest is an important part of community forest. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has occasionally raised the problem of including community forests in policies on forest land allocation and the benefits enjoyed by the forest people but no agreement has been reached between the various ministries and branches and there remains doubt over the position and real effect of community forestry.

A study on the hamlet forests in Cao Bang province shows that hamlet forests are a form that exist in the provinces inhabited by ethnic minorities. These forests have long been traditionally established, meeting the communities’ requirements for spiritual life, water and forest products. These forests are now recognised by the authorities and allocated to the communities. Good management and protection of hamlet forests will help consolidate these communities.

Essential oils in the European market

(Ha chu Chu)

Essential oils and oleoresins, aromatic oily liquids or soiled mixture materials ar non-timber forest products. They are used in different industries, depending on the type of oils and the quality. Some information on the consumption of these products in the European community is given in this paper.

Research on the effect of side pressure and thickness of bamboo (Dendrocalamus membranaceus) blocks on the hollow space along the glueing line of bamboo block-board

(Bui Chi Kien)

Bamboo block-board has been produced in Vietnam. This product is much desired in foreign markets such as Canada and the United States. However, problems remain related to the hollow space along the gluing line which have a negative impact on price and quality.
