1. Research on some biological characteristics of Parashorea chinensis Wang, as a basis for the development of the plant in the Cuc Phuong National park

(Vu Van Can)

Parashorea chinensis Wang is the timber species, which is normally used for construction and household commodities. Only a few plants remain in native forests. Parashorea chinensis Wang is obviously in danger of extinction. Various studies of biological characteristics of the plants are the basis for proposing technical solutions to provide information on forestation and enrichment of forest by Parashorea chinensis Wang on those places affected by calcium carbonate.

2. Results from hybridizing some eucalypt species

(Nguyen Viet Cuong)

The project raised some fundamental issues on hybridization such as post-blossoming, storing conditions of pollen and the best time for stamen to receive pollen, form characteristics of hybrids as well as hybrid growth in certain areas. Research on pollen storage showed that it still germinated well after 4 years at -30oC. The best time for the stamen head to receive pollen is 4 days after it is deposited. Those hybrids selected in the project show 1.5—2 times the growth rate of others on a large scale.

3. Pilot of hybrid acacia reaction in the early growing time with mineral fertilizer N (Urea), K (Kali clorua) and P (Superphosphate) used separately or in combination in Tan Lap, Binh Phuoc forests

(Pham The Dung)

Pilot research into the reaction of hybrid acacia to fertilizers used separately in pot experiments as a basis for utilizing mineral fertilizers in forests were made in Dong Phu, Binh Phuoc Province. Study results of 8 mineral fertilizer formulas showed that the best growth of hybrid acacia was achieved with a combination of N, P and K, compared with non-fertilization. The experiment clearly demonstrated the effect of K on growth of acacia.

4. Initial investigation of the effect of weather on the flowering capacity of Pinus Merkusiana (Hoang Minh Giam).

Pinus Merkusiana is a slow-growing species which grows mainly in Southeast Asia and southern China. Accumulation of organic compounds during the growth process depends greatly on climatic factors (temperature, humidity). These factors directly influence production, accumulation and generation of resin. Study results showed that the resin quality is closely related to humidity (correlated coefficient range from 0.632 to 0.98), regardless of the area or age of trees.

5. Cutting propagation results for Cinnamomum balansae for preservation of genetic resources of forest plants

( Nguyen Hoang Nghia)

Cinnamomum balansae is a rare species and it is hard to find a grown plant in the wild. As it is difficult to collect its seeds, raising and cutting is an effective method of propagation. This species generates its roots quite easily. Even grown plants (15 year old) without stimulus have a rooting percentage of 40%. Two substances with potential to increase the rate of root generation are AIA and ABT1. These stimulants have potential to increase the rate of root generation considerably, sometimes twice as high as the control. These stimulants help plants generate root sets better than the control in terms of root quantity for cuttings and raising. It is possible to use the cutting propagation method to produce cuttings for conservation and development of forests in the future.

6. Research results on hunting and trading of wild animals in the Pu Luong Natural Conservation and neighboring areas

(Hoang Lien Son)

The research described in this paper is designed to propose the recommendations, supporting and reinforcing the capacity of those authorities responsible for management and protection of wild animals and other non-timber forest products. At the same time, recommendations are proposed to improve the social-economic lives of people in the Pu Luong Natural Conservation and neighboring forest areas. A market channel is designed, demonstrating consumer activities in the studied areas and analyzing supply chains in the system.

7. Non-timber products for hunger elimination and poverty reduction in the mountainous Northern area

(Vu Long).

The mountainous area in northern Vietnam has a large area of natural forest and the highest poverty rate in the country. The allocation of land and forest to families and the community is virtually complete. This allocation gives potential to families, to use forest resources to generate income to help eliminate hunger and reduce poverty. Given the exhausted resources of natural forests, it is impossible to exploit timber so it is important to explore the use of non-timber forest products to contribute to hunger elimination and poverty reduction.

8. Horizontal slide of machinery when cultivating on the slope

(Nguyen Can).

Horizontal slide is something that occurs when bulldozers move horizontally on sloping ground. It is usually the result of soil layers beneath the chain contacting tracks, sometimes the chain slides against the ground as a result of weak cling to its ground or the soil surface turned up. The occurrence exerts harmful influence on the technical parameters of bulldozer. In order to reduce the occurrence, it is necessary to apply proper soil making processes and to select proper tractors and soil cultivation machines.

9. Designing, manufacturing and testing results and experiment with a 900 ton particle board machine

(Nguyen Manh Hoat)

In the production of particle board, thermo-pressing machines are popular for the final stage of the production line where productivity and quality of the product is determined. Unlike single machines, those on the production line should be synchronous and comply with the technological requirements specified in the project. The main parameters of the designed machines are calculated according to the technological requirements, from which dimension and components are computed, and durability, stability and specific design are tested.
