FSIV has also been developing mass-propagation techniques to assist in the technological transfer of the genetically improved planting material to commercial plantations while maintaining diversified breeding populations for the main <span>\u00a0<\/span>plantation species for long term genetic improvement. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Main research activities are focussed on:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>1.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Selection of the best performing clones of hybrid or pure species for use in commercial plantations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>2.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Further<span>\u00a0 <\/span>hybridization<span>\u00a0 <\/span>to<span>\u00a0 <\/span>integrated fast growth and wood quality and produce<span>\u00a0 <\/span>new varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>3.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Establishment of advanced breeding populations and seed orchards, while maintaining genetic diversity, to produce genetically improved seed for new plantations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>4.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Developing and refining vegetative propagation technologies (cutting, tissue culture) for the release of new<span>\u00a0 <\/span>germplasm<span>\u00a0 <\/span>for<span>\u00a0 <\/span>commercial application, and<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>5.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Application of molecular markers to evaluate genetic diversity and mating pattern in the breeding populations and seed orchards to monitor breeding programs.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Principle results to date:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>1.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Release of 19 newly selected clones of <em>Acacia auriculiformis<\/em> and <em>Eucalyptus camaldulensis<\/em> showing fast growth and<span>\u00a0 <\/span>desirable wood quality properties<span>\u00a0 <\/span>for commercial planting in the Central, Central Highlands and South Regions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>2.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Transformation of 10 progeny\/clonal trials to national seed orchards to supply genetically improved seed for commercial planting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>3.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Testing of 140 hybrid combinations of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em>, <em>Acacia<\/em> and <em>Pinus merkusii<\/em> across<span>\u00a0 <\/span>different ecological zones . <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>4.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Selections of<span>\u00a0 <\/span>promising<span>\u00a0 <\/span>combinations of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em> hybrid<span>\u00a0 <\/span>were identified and clonally tested. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>5.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Establishment of 10 ha of second generation seedling seed orchards and 6 ha of clone banks of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em> and <em>Acacia<\/em> using genetic material from about 1200 plus trees using 700 individual seedlots and propagation of 650 clonal lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>6.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Publication of 8 technical guidelines and protocols for the vegetative propagation of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em> and <em>Acacia<\/em> clones using cutting and tissue culture techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\"><span>7.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">Publication of 16 articles in international and Vietnamese scientific journals based on theses of 3 Doctoral and 16 Masters graduates.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: 10pt\">The ongoing genetics and tree improvement program is contributing to improved forest productivity and plantation quality in Vietnam.
