At the same time, the survey team will also conduct interviews and dialogues with local staffs and forest holders as well as take photos and estimate different parameters through eye estimation and rapid measurement of plantation indicators.

Ø Inventory and measurement of sample plots:

· Inventory of permanent sample plots applied for different varieties of Acacia, plantation formations, site conditions at the area of 1 ha per plot (100 x 100 or 50 x 200m) and of sub-plots as well.

· Sub-plots have been established at random. Sample plots have been divided in equal lines and sub-plots identified evenly. Of this, 30 – 35 sub-plots of regenerated stands of 6 months – 1 year old with the area of 1 m2 each are measured. With the regenerated stands of 2 – 4 years old, 5 sub-plots of the area of 4 m2 each are measured.

· In the sub-plots number of stems is accounted and the height of the regenerated trees is estimated.

Ø Collected data then have been analyzed to verify typical characteristics of stands, their natural regeneration features and relations amongst different variables using generally applied methods.

The data that have been collected are as below:

1. Records of plantations with various Acacia species in different localities,

2. At total 17 sites have been surveyed,

3. Field visits have been expedited to 17 selected districts of 4 provinces.

4. The total number of managerial and technical staffs, household heads and representatives of research institutions is 20 (Annex 4),

5. 50 photos have been taken (Annex 5),

6. Number of surveyed plots: 30 (Annex 6),

7. Measured sub-plots: 330 sub-plots of 1 year old, 100 sub-plots of 2 – 4 years old (Annex 6) have been investigated at different naturally regenerated stands.

The main contents of the Thematic Report (Final Report) cover the following items:

1. Background

2. An overview of Acacia as planting species and Acacia plantations in Vietnam

3. Present status of natural regeneration of Acacia plantations in the Northern provinces of Vietnam

4. Specific characteristics of Acacia plantations natural regeneration

5.
