For the next 10 years the planting area of these two species will probably be about 130.000 ha. To date there have been thousands of ha of Acacia plantations established throughout the country, with seeds imported from Australia or collected from A. auriculiformis and A. mangium plantations of unknown provenance, which were established in southern Vietnam in the 1960s.

Recent results of trials carried out at Bavi by the Research Centre for Forest Tree Improvement (RCFTI) and the Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV), have shown that among 13 provenances of A. auriculiformis and 8 provenances of A. mangium, only some have high productivity. They are Coen River, Kings Plains and Morehead River of A. auriculiformis and Pongaki and Ingham of A. mangium. However, seed quantity from these provenances is limited.

Furthermore, in some parts of southern Vietnam, there exist natural hybrids between A. auriculiformis and A. mangium, which show very marked growth heterosis. If seeds collected from these hybrids are used for plantation establishment, there will be segregation and degradation in the next generation, so they will not maintain the vigour of F1 hybrids. In the case of cutting propagation, however, genetic characteristics will be transmitted completely from ortets to ramets, therefore heterosis will be retained.

Acacia auriculiformis and A. mangium are two of the main planting species in Vietnam.
