1. INTRODUCTION<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/B> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> Dipterocarpaceae<\/SPAN><\/I> is a typical plant family of the tropical forest in <\/SPAN>South-east Asia<\/SPAN>. The family has wide distribution ranging from <\/SPAN>India<\/SPAN> to the <\/SPAN>Philippines<\/SPAN> and contains about 470 species of 13 genera. The natural distribution ranges from <\/SPAN>Borneo<\/SPAN> to <\/SPAN>Cambodia<\/SPAN>, <\/SPAN>Thailand<\/SPAN>, <\/SPAN>Laos<\/SPAN>, <\/SPAN>Myanmar<\/SPAN>, <\/SPAN>India<\/SPAN>, <\/SPAN>Vietnam<\/SPAN> and <\/SPAN>China<\/SPAN> (Yunan, Quangxi, Quangtung and <\/SPAN>Hainan<\/SPAN> <\/SPAN>Island<\/SPAN>). Dipterocarpaceae<\/I> has 6 genera and about 50 species in <\/SPAN>Vietnam<\/SPAN> where the main natural distribution is in moist and dry tropical forest in <\/SPAN>South Vietnam<\/SPAN> (Pham Hoang Ho, 1999; Nguyen Hoang Nghia, 2002).<\/SPAN><\/FONT> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> Due to wars and over-exploitation during the past, the forest resource containing dipterocarp species was reduced at a considerable rate in both area and quality. It is clear that conservation and development of dipterocarp species becomes at present more imperative than any other time.<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> 2. RESEARCH SPECIES<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/B> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> There are two dipterocarp species groups that require urgent conservation efforts are:<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> · <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/SPAN>Dipterocarp species of evergreen broadleaved forest ecosystem,<\/FONT><\/SPAN> · <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/SPAN>Dipterocarp species of coastal sandy soil forest.<\/FONT><\/SPAN> These two forest ecosystems are very sensitive, easily be influenced, destroyed, difficult to protect and restore.<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> Sandy soil areas along the coast play a significant role in maintaining protection forest belts and landscape for local people’s livelihood. Some dipterocarp species have been found as the main components of the coastal sandy soil ecosystem in the past, however at present, they have been exploited severely, their resource become depleted and some species are facing danger of extinction.<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> The four especially important dipterocarp species occurred in coastal sandy soil ecosystem and involved in genecological surveys (and their degree of endangerment occording to IUCN’s categories, IUCN 1994) are:<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> Dipterocarpus chartaceus<\/SPAN><\/I> Sym.<\/SPAN><\/FONT> D. caudatus<\/SPAN><\/I> spp. caudatus<\/I> <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/TD> Hopea cordata<\/SPAN><\/I> Vidal<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/TD> CR D<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/TD> Shorea falcata<\/SPAN><\/I> Vidal<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/TD> CR D<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/TD> Shorea roxburghii<\/SPAN><\/I> G.Don<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/TD> VU A1cd<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/TD> <\/FONT><\/SPAN> CR: Critically endangered: It is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the immediate future, as defined by any of the criteria A to E <\/FONT><\/SPAN> EN: Endangered: It is not Critically Endangered but is facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future, as defined by any of the criteria A to E<\/FONT><\/SPAN> VU: Vulnerable: It is not Critically Endangered or Endangered but is facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future, as defined by any of the criteria A to D (IUCN 1994).<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Abstract<\/p>\n Accoding to careful surveys in some provinces along the coast in Central and South Vietnam, among almost 50 dipterocarp species, there are four species that occur on coastal sandy soil and play an important role in rehabilitation of forest ecosystems in sandy soil areas. They are Dipterocarpus chartaceus Sym., Hopea cordata Vidal, Shorea roxburghii G.Don and Shorea falcata Vidal. Sandy dipterocarps (Dipterocarpus chartaceus Sym.) can be found in sandy soil areas along the coast from Phan Thiet town (Binh Thuan province) to Ba Ria – Vung Tau in small populations of from about some dozens individuals to some hundreds individuals while sandy Shoreas (Shorea roxburghii G.Don) occur in moist evergreen forest and sandy soil forest ecosystem (such as in Takou Ecological Conservation Forest and Binh Chau Nature Reserve). The last two dipterocarps namely Hopea cordata Vidal and Shorea falcata Vidal. are very rare species. Shorea falcata Vidal. is a large-size tree species (up to 20 m height and 1 m diameter) which has been found in only two areas: 7 individuals in Cam Hai Dong (Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa) and 6 individuals in Xuan Hoa (Phu Yen) while Hopea cordata Vidal has been found only in Cam Hai Dong in a population of less than 200 individuals. These two species are classified as critically endangered (CR) according to IUCN (1994).
