<\/p>\nOn 20 September 2024, the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences (VAFS), in collaboration with the United States Forest Service (USFS), organised a workshop on \u201cUS DART-TOFMS Wood Identification Technology \u2013 A Move Towards a Transparent Timber Value Chain in Vietnam\u201d to introduce the general information of the non-project and discuss the implementation plan. The workshop aims to introduce and disseminate the adoption of DART-TOFMS technology in enhancing wood ID, combating illegal logging, and building a transparent, responsible, and sustainable timber supply chain in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

Image 1.<\/strong> Prof. Dr. Vo Dai Hai, President of VAFS, gave opening remarks<\/em><\/p>\n The workshop received about 40 participants from local agencies (Provincial Forestry Protection Department, Customs, People\u2019s Procuracy), research institutes, universities, associations, NGOs, and international organisations. Especially, the workshop also welcomed large delegates of Associations, timber industries and exporters in Binh Duong, Dong Nai provinces and Ho Chi Minh City.<\/p>\n The workshop heard presentations on (i) The achievements of the V-WISC project in the application of advanced US technology in enhancing wood identification in Vietnam; (ii) Wood identification in Vietnam, challenges and opportunities in the face of increasing demands from international markets and commitments to environment protection; and (iii) Application of DART-TOFM in wood identification in Vietnam, benefit for businesses, legal compliance and the way forwards.<\/p>\n In the closing remarks, Prof. Dr Vo Dai Hai appreciated the cooperation and support of the USFS in the capacity building of wood identification toward developing and effectively operating V-WISC in Vietnam. Prof Hai believed that, with the support of the USFS, the DART-TOFMS technology will be successfully developed, making an essential contribution to the control of legal logging in Vietnam\u2019s domestic and international trade.<\/p>\n Image 2.<\/strong> Participants attended the workshop<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The National Research Project to develop “Silvicultural treatments to support the five -million hectare plantation programme and an eventual ban of timber extraction from natural forest” was carried out by the FSIV for three years (1997 – 2000).
