Integral Projection Models for trees: a new parameterization method and a validation of model output

Matrix models are popular tools for plant demographic studies, but their application to long-lived, slow-growing species is hampered by the fact that (i) model output is highly sensitive to category width and (ii) growth variation between individuals can only be partially accounted for. Integral Projection Models (IPMs) – an extension of matrix models – offer a solution to these problems.     … [Read more...]

Current Methods and Future Needs for Tree Growth Prediction in Vietnam

DURING the past 30 years more than 2.14 million ha of plantation was established in Vietnam. However, survival rate was very low, with less than 50% of plantations developing to commercially valuable forest. As a result, productivity of plantations is low in comparison with other countries. It was estimated that the mean annual increment (MAl) of plantations in Vietnam is only about IOm3/halyr (Forest Science and Technology Department 1994). Site and species (provenance) matching and … [Read more...]

Climatic Requirements of Some Main Plantation Tree Species in Vietnam

THE TOTAL AREA of forest and forest land under management is about 20 million ha (General Statistical Office 1991) which occupies about 60% of the country's area. At the end of 1993, natural forest was estimated at 8630000 ha, forest plantation at 758 000 ha, and land without forest at 11 420000 ha. In the action plan for forest rehabilitation and reforestation, a total of 5 million ha is to be reforested by the year 2000. It is estimated that 1.5-1.6 million ha of plantation has … [Read more...]

STRUCTURAL AND DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF THE DRY DIPTEROCARP FOREST IN CENTRAL HIGHLAND OF VIETNAM

Tran Van Con Silviculture Division Forest Science Institute of Vietnam Dong Ngac, Tu Liem, Hanoi, Vietnam E-mail: tranvancon@fsiv.org.vn or tranvan_con@yahoo.com ABTRACT In Vietnam, the dry dipterocarp forest accounts some 500,000 ha and concentrates in lowland parts of Dak Lak and southern Gia Lai in central highland (CH). This forest type is commonly found where is a monsoon climate with a long marked dry season (5-6 months) and a total amount of rainfall ranges from 1200 to 1600 … [Read more...]
