Trajectories of deforestation, coffee expansion and displacement of shifting cultivation in the Central Highlands of Vietnam

ABSTRACT Production of commodities for global markets is an increasingly important factor of tropical deforestation, taking over smallholders subsistence farming. Measures to reduce deforestation and convert shifting cultivation systems towards permanent crops have recently been strengthened in several countries. But these changes have variable environmental and social impacts, including on ethnic minorities. In Vietnam, although a forest transition – i.e. shift from shrinking to expanding … [Read more...]

Progress in the genetic improvement for some main commercial planting tree species in Vietnam

Research Centre for Forest Tree Improvement, FSIV SUMMARY FSIV has a long running program of genetic improvement for some of the principle plantation species to select the best genetic material for high productivity and wood quality for the various wood and non-wood forest products. FSIV has also been developing mass-propagation techniques to assist in the technological transfer of the genetically improved planting material to commercial plantations while maintaining diversified breeding … [Read more...]

Determination some physical and mechanical properties and usability of edrela odorata wood

Do Van Ban Forest Plant Resources Research Division (FPRRD) Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV)  The tree species Cedrela odorata L. belongs to the family Meliaceae, and is distributed widely in  Latin America. In 1986 and 1989 Nguyen Huu Loc, Pham Quang Minh and Do Xuan Quy brought some seeds from Mexico and seeded them in places such as Huu Lung (Lang Son Province) and Xuan Mai (Hanoi City). Ten years after seeding, some seedlings have become big trees with … [Read more...]

Le Thu Hien, Do Van ban, Le Qui Thang  Forest Plant Resources Research Division            There are 13 species in the list of popular commercial tree species for planting in the Central North of Vietnam, of which wood properties of 8 species have been researched. The methodology complied with the national stardards of Vietnam, from TCVN 358-70 to TCVN 370-70. Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hardw: Wood density was … [Read more...]

Initial determining mechanism of resistancein Pinus merkusii Jungh. and Vriese to Dendrolimus punctatus Walker

Dao Ngoc Quang, Le Van Binh Forest Science Institute of Vietnam  Dendrolimus punctatus Walker is the most damaging pest to Pinus merkusii Jungh. &Vriese in terms of both level of attack per individual tree and percentage of trees attacked in a location. It causes not only serious losses in yield as well as wood and resin quality, but also effects the ecological environment. However, about three hectares of 30 year old P. merkusii plantation in Son Loc commune, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh … [Read more...]

Anthracnose disease of Manglietia conifera Dandy seedlings in nursery

Pham Quang Thu Forest Science Institute of Vietnam  Manglietia connifera Dandy young seedlings in the nursery are often infected with anthracnose disease, with a very high disease incidence in low-light and too high soil moisture condition. The pathogen is determined by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc (anamorphic stage). Sexual stages (telemorph) of the fungus are Glomerella cingulata (Stoneman) Spald. & H. Schrenk being found on diseased leaves. … [Read more...]
