There are 13 species in the list of popular commercial tree species for planting in the Central North of Vietnam, of which wood properties of 8 species have been researched. The methodology complied with the national stardards of Vietnam, from TCVN 358-70 to TCVN 370-70.

Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hardw: Wood density was very low (420 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient was medium (0,36). Fiber saturation point was low (24%). Crushing strength, static bending resistance and  resistance to splitting were weak (261 kg/cm2, 623 kg/cm2 and 6 kg/cm respectively). Impact bending coefficient was medium (0,7). Wood can be used for low-price furniture, construction as well as materials for match production or packing

Acacia auriculiformis A.Cunn.: Wood density was low (597 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient, crushing strength and resistance to splitting were medium (0,41, 462 kg/cm2 and 11 kg/cm respectively). Static bending resistance was weak (1.009 kg/cm2). Impact bending coefficient was high (1,2). Wood in large size can be used for construction or materials for art and handycraft production. Small-size wood is used for material for paper and MDF production or mine poles.

Acacia hybrid (Acacia mangium x Acacia auriculiformis): Wood density was low (574 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient was medium (0,39). Crushing strength and static bending resistance were weak (417 kg/cm2 and 1.013 kg/cm2 respectively). Resistance to splitting was medium (12 kg/cm). Timber is used for materials for paper making, MDF and mine poles.

Acacia mangium Willd.: Wood density was low (586 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient was medium (0,46). Crushing strength and resistance to splitting were medium (432 kg/cm2 and 12,7kg/cm, respectively). Static bending resistance was weak (994 kg/cm2). Timber in large sizes can be used for construction or furniture while timber in small size is used for materials for paper making, MDF and mine poles.

Mangletia conifera Dandy: Wood density was very low (480 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient, crushing strength and static bending resistance were medium (0,43, 611 kg/cm2 and 1.232 kg/cm2 respectively). Timber in large sizes can be used as materials for furniture, horizontal lacquered board, worshipping objects, pencil production and mine poles. Sapwood has to be preserved before utilization.

Canarium album Lour. Raeusch: Wood density was low (590 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient was medium (0,44). Crushing strength, static bending resistance and resistance to splitting were weak (347 kg/cm2, 1.080 kg/cm2 and 5,4 kg/cm respectively). Impact bending coefficient was rather high (0,8). Wood is used for normal construction, low-price furniture, and materials for plywood.

Melia azedarach L.: Wood density was low (524 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient was medium (0,44). Fiber saturation point was low (22%). Crushing strength and static bending resistance were weak (335 kg/cm2 and 627 kg/cm2 respectively). Resistance to splitting was medium (10,5kg/cm). Impact bending coefficient was weak (0,54). Wood can be used as materials for normal construction, low-price furniture or farming tools.

Dendrocalamus membranaceus Munro: Wood density was high (842 kg/m3). Volume shrinkage coefficient, crushing strength and static bending resistance were medium (0,68, 681 kg/cm2 and 1.349 kg/cm2 respectively). Tensile strength was very high (1.781 kg/cm2). It can be used as materials for partical board, normal construction, handycraft production or paper making Keywords: wood density, volume shrinkage coefficient, crushing strength, static bending resistance and tensile strength .
