Assessment of disease attack on eucalypt species and provenances in trial plantings in eastern South Vietnam
(Nguyen Hoang Nghia)
Diseases of eucalypts appeared in the late 1980s in eastern South Vietnam and during the 1990s they spread to other regions. Disease attack is classified in five levels: no disease, low level disease, average level of disease, serious disease and very serious disease attack in the trial plantings established in Song May (Dong Nai), Bau Bang (Binh Duong) and Tan Tao (Ho Chi Minh city).
From results of the assessment and trials with different eucalypt species, the author draws conclusions about the main pathogens of eucalypt foliage together with recommendations on selection of eucalypt species for forest planting programmes with the objective of high productivity.

Application of site survey method for forest planting and forest regrowth maintenance in some international forestry projects in Vietnam
(Ngo Dinh Que and Nguyen Khac Ninh)
The site survey method for forest planting and forest regrowth maintenance is highly regarded in Vietnam. The method consists of:
identifying important factors in the project regions such as: soil types generated from different parent rocks, depth of soil layer, ratio of mixed stone fragments, desirable species for regeneration and indicator vegetation
collecting information and grouping soil types for use objecives
This method has been applied on 30,000 ha of new forest planting. Results show that where appropriate species were planted as determined by the site survey, tree growth is good.

Pharmaceutical value and improvement of cultivated Ganoderma species in Vietnam
(Pham Quang Thu)
Ganoderma species provide valuable pharmaceutical material with outstanding effectiveness in the treatment of heart and vascular disease, tumors and ageing. No ill effects are associated with these treatments. The effectiveness of Ganoderma treatments depends on the species and variety. The variety G.I. HB collected in North Vietnam has a higher polysaccharide content than other varieties. This group of substances is effective against cancer, improving immunity by increasing biological synthesis of protein. Vietnamese Ganoderma varieties have a high content of triterpenoids, compounds which inhibit the biological synthesis of cholesterol, regulate blood pressure and enhance liver function. The fruit of Vietnamese Ganoderma species contain many other compounds which have not been studied compared with Ganoderma tsugue of Taiwan and South Korea which have only four main compounds. The quality of cultivated Ganoderma is higher due to supplementation with nutrients and the use of media containing substances with high biological activity. To enhance the plants ability as a cancer treatment and for regulation of the immune system, sawdust from Cinnamomum camphora wood, especially branches, leaves or sawdust of Dacrydium pierrei is added to the medium for Ganoderma cultivation.

Preliminary research on defects of Paulownia fortunei wood
(Nguyen Tu Kim)
Paulownia fortunei is widely planted in Vietnam and other countries in the region as it has a wide ecological range and is, at the same time, a fast-growing species whose wood meets the raw material requirements of many industries.
To investigate uses of the wood of this species, the authors carried out a study on natural defects of wood from trees harvested in Ngan Son District, Cao Bang province. P. fortunei is a large, fast-growing timber species with few natural wood defects. Any defects are usually slight and thus have little effect on wood quality. The proportion of healthy wood is high, thus giving a high ratio of wood used. Other characteristics of P. fortunei wood need to be studied to draw comprehensive conclusions.

Ecology and planting technique for Bruguiera parviflora

Development of a technological line for furniture manufacturing with eucalypt and Acacia auriculiformis wood
(Tran Tuan Nghia)
The research presented in this paper deals with the establishment of a model of equipment lines and technology for producing furniture from Eucalypts and Acacias. The problems are as follows:
To define suitable regular drying diagrams for sawn Eucalypt and Acacia wood and to establish the appropriate technology for making blockboard from Eucalypts and Acacias.
To propose a design project to improve equipment lines for producing indoor and outdoor furniture from Eucalypt and Acacia wood on a small scale.

Quick determination of wood density at different levels of moisture content
(Do Van Ban)
The density of wood is one of its most important characteristics. Different densities may be given for the same wood species, expressed at different moisture contents.
Based on these values, standards and correlations between the densities at different moisture contents for 51 wood species, the authors have established formulas for fast conversion of density at any moisture to density at the corresponding moisture content of wood.
