Isolation and selection of bacteria antagonistic to the fungi causing damping off disease in the root area of pine

(Pham Quang Thu and Tran Thanh Trang)

In the process of sowing pine in the nursery, the seedlings usually suffer from damping-off disease, causing high production losses. As a way of reducing the loss caused by this disease using biological measures, strains of endophytic bacteria capable of producing antibiotics which inhibit the growth of pathological fungi are isolated and selected. Seventy bacterial strains have been isolated from 12 plant species and 11 bacterial strains that can inhibit the growth of two pathological fungi: Fusarium oxysporum and Phytophthora sp. have been selected. Of these, three strains: MD2, SP14 and SP18 are very effective. Strains MD2 and SP14 produce an inhibiting circle 30 mm in diameter to Phytophthora sp. The MD2 strain inhibits the growth of both pathological fungi.

Results of a survey on the composition of and damage level caused by shoot borers on some species of the Meliaceae family

(Nguyen Van Do)

In Vietnam, the Meliaceae is one of the main families of forest tree species. So far, 19 genera and about 90 species have been identified. Some species of high economic value of the sub-family Swietenioideae, such as Chukrasia tabularis A. juss, Toona sureni (Blume) Merr., and Toona sinensis (A. Juss.) Roem are being used for forest planting. One of the greatest handicaps in planting and developing these species is insect pests, of which shoot borers cause serious losses. Results of a survey on the composition of shoot borer species on some tree species of the Meliaceae and the level of damage caused by these insects will help the forest development and forest protection planning staff to identify the main shoot borer species and select Meliaceae species of high economic value, which are less susceptible to the shoot borer, Hypsipyla robusta, ensuring their successful planting and protection.

The effect of fertilizer on growth of eucalypts on acid sulfate soils in Thanh Hoa, Long An province

(Fuminori Miyatake, Pham The Dung and Pham Ngoc Co)

E. camaldulensis and E. tereticornis are species selected for forest plantations in the Mekong River Delta to supply raw material for paper production. To attain high productivity, it is necessary to use intensive management techniques including fertilizer application.

This paper presents some research on the effect of fertilizer application on the growth of E. camaldulensis and E. tereticornis. The growth of a 3.5-year-old plantation increases 20—30% in diameter and 0—35% in height compared with a plantation without fertilizer application. The increase in growth can be clearly seen in a 5-month-old plantation. The response to fertilizer application does not differ between eucalypt provenances. The combination of NPK and phosphate gives a better result than the application of either one by itself. Soil fertility under eucalypt plantations is greatly decreased after 8 years and fertilizer application is needed.

Management of the community forest of some ethnic minorities in North Vietnam’s mountainous region and recommendations on a policy for community forest management

(Cao Lam Anh)

Finding a form of community forest management and elaborating policy framework to support community forest management means having a legal framework which ensures the participation of the community in forest management as real forest managers and enjoyment of the benefits which other organizations involved in forest management, forest protection and development receive.

The concept of buffer zones for nature reserves and national parks

(Vo Nguyen Huan)

Buffer zone is a relatively new term which is being much discussed in Vietnam and elsewhere around the world. However, there is no common definition of the term. This paper looks at different local and international definitions and descriptions of the term and proposes a definition of the term ‘buffer zone’ for Vietnam.

A study of the demand for particleboard consumption in Vietnam — some theoretical and practical problems

(Nguyen Thi Lai and Tran Thi Thu Thuy)

Composite board in general and particleboard in particular has recently appeared on the Vietnamese market and is a highly promising commodity. To help it achieve prominence on the domestic market and later for export, policy makers should devise strategies to support and promote the particleboard processing effort. This is a new branch of production which is important for forest product processing in Vietnam.
