1. The role of casuarina on coastal sandy soil

Vietnam has a 3,200 km long coastline, with a total of about 600,000 ha coastal sandy soil. One part of that sandy soil has been used for agriculture. The remainder of about 462,000 ha is not favourable for industrial plants (Phan Lieu, 1987).

On these kinds of sandy soil, Casuarina equisetifolia is the most superior wooden species and is widely planted with the following objectives:

· Sand stabilization forest, forest belts set against moving sand in order to protect farming fields, roads and villages.

· Soil and environment improvement, especially in areas having hot winds such as Quang Binh and former Thuan Hai province.

· Windbreak forest belts acting against typhoons for most of the provinces in Central Vietnam.

· Supply of highly valuable firewood for the people living along the coast from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan province.
